The advantages of studying the International Baccalaureate (IB)
With more than 15 years’ experience in education, María Alcaide has been in charge of various departments including Foreign Languages and Baccalaureate, and she is currently the Baccalaureate Coordinator for Agora International School Barcelona, the only educational centre in Sant Esteve Sesrovires that offers the International Baccalaureate (IB). Who better than María to explain the advantages of this highly-respected, internationally-recognised qualification? In a recent interview with La Premsa del Baix, Maria tells all…..
Maria firstly explains how the IB fits into the context of Agora International School Barcelona’s overall education vision; at the Post-16 stage students need to start identifying their strengths and weaknesses in order to make key decisions about their future academic and professional development. In order to help the students through this process a Pre-University Program has been designed which incorporates individual coaching sessions, Work Experience, and many other supplementary activities which help the students to make these important choices.
María points out that the International Baccalaureate (IB) adopts a broad academic approach covering a wide range of subjects, which enables students to maintain flexibility in their university choices. This wide-ranging approach helps students to develop a greater capacity for critical thinking and a more extensive general knowledge, and also encompasses a number of key personal and social values including effort and self-discipline, tolerance and teamwork.
María Alcaide also highlights the academic value of the IB, and notes that IB students are not required to present for the Selectividad programme for entry to Spanish Universities but can achieve a qualification that is nationally and internationally recognised, and of particular value to students wishing to pursue their university studies abroad. The world-wide acceptance of the IB diploma is one of the keys to its success and reinforces the school’s international and global vision, allowing our students to access some of the most prestigious universities in the world.
